Default Design Specifications for Engineered Pulleys
  • shafts shall conform to:
    • a maximum deflection of 0.001 inches/inch under ANSI B 105.1 deflection formula
    • acceptable under ANSI B 105.1 formula for bending & torsion with a factor of safety of equal to 1.5 
    • infinite life criteria as given by the Soderberg relation evaluated under the distortion energy theory of failure
  • locking devices shall be chosen such that:
    • shaft pressure does not exceed shaft yield
    • transmitted torque does not exceed maximum allowable torque
    • bending moment does not exceed allowable bending
  • hubs shall be sized according to the thick-walled cylinder theory
  • Von Mises stresses shall not exceed:
    • yield in the hub
    • 70% of yield in the end disc
    • 50% of yield in the rim
  • maximum shear stress in the end disc, hub or rim shall not exceed 50% of component yield
  • both normal & shear principal stresses in the end disc or rim shall not exceed 50% of material yield
  • no normal or shear stress in the end disc, hub or rim shall fail under fatigue
  • end disc, hub, rim and locking devices shall be evaluated at all critical locations such as radii, points of minimum thickness and transitional zones
